Appeals lawyer Nora Dockson might be able to free Silvia Simon from prison. But why should she try?
An ex-con herself, Nora broke free from her trailer park roots and went to law school. She works only for convicted felons.
Silvia, a young single mother, insists she's not guilty of arson-murder. But investigators determined only she could have started the fire. The prosecutor argued that Silvia set it to kill her daughter.
Was he wrong? Or is Silvia lying?
Trying to make sense of what happened, Nora ends up at the murky junction where arson myths and bad-mother stereotypes collide with modern science.
Piecing together Silvia's story, Nora discovers more of her own . . .

Don't miss this one!
Diana Deverell's Nora Dockson series just keeps getting better and better! This 4th installment finds Nora at a good place in her life - she's enjoying professional success as an attorney with the Spokane Legal Resource Center, her romance with State Trooper Kent Harper is heating up, and she's even planning to buy a downtown loft. But just when you think Nora's overcome her past, a shocking new case brings back all the memories of her former life. Nora takes on the appeal of Silvia Simon, a young woman convicted of arson. Silvia is adamant that she didn't set the fire in her trailer-park home that killed her young daughter. Sitting across from Silvia at the Washington Corrections Center for Women, Nora is reminded of herself - and vows to discover who was really responsible for that fire.
This is a much more nuanced story line than the usual thriller. As in real life, the lines between criminal misconduct, bad judgment, and ignorance are blurry, and one wrong step - intentional or not - can have disastrous consequences. No super-villains here - just a satisfying story of the painstaking forensic and legal work that overturning a conviction involves.
All of Nora's sidekicks from the earlier books are back - Winnie, Channing, Quinn, LaNoir, and Nora's nemesis mother, Patty-Jean - and they're all involved in their own subplots. Just like Nora, their lives are moving on, but you'll have to read the book to find out how.
Another not-to-be-missed legal thriller from Diana Deverell!
