Publisher Description
If you're lucky, the mysterious something missing from life is found right in front of you despite the risk.
Widowed Lillian Fernsby has been buffeted by life's ills, and the grief is sometimes unrelenting. Keeping sadness at bay by making merry or being an outrageous flirt is all well and good, but what she really wants is to marry again. When her brother's best friend comes back into her life to protect her from an unidentified stalker, she's intrigued by the mystery and challenge he represents.
The Honorable Thaddeus Carrington is the third son of a viscount, but he refuses to hang upon his father's coattails or put much stock in family pressure to marry. As a Bow Street Runner, he adores the thrill of solving cases, but when he's tapped to guard the sister of his best friend from a disturbing threat, he struggles between remembering her as a young schoolgirl, as well as his confusing new awareness for her as a woman.
While a flirtatious game of cat and mouse begins between them and desire builds, Lillian's pursuer grows bolder, and Thaddeus pledges greater vigilance in keeping her safe. Peril reaches a breaking point one spring evening, throwing the important things of life into sharp relief and threatening their romance. Only they can decide if they want to fight for love before disaster—and death—strikes.

all around marvelous story
Loved it! Lillian, a widow of five years has been receiving bouquets with criptic and slightly distressing notes. Since Thaddeus, her brother’s best friend is a Bow Street Runner, Elliott hires him to protect her. Lillian used to have a crush on Thaddeus when she was younger, and as they spend time together they develop romantic feelings. However, woven throughout this story is a sinister threat that complicates everything. The characters are fabulous. Elliott is the perfect overprotective brother. He is new to his title and not only struggles with his duties, but also has a hard time keeping Lillian’s behavior from causing scandal. Lillian’s pain will break your heart. She uses flirtation and feigned gaiety to keep her sadness at bay. Thaddeus (sigh) is devoted to his career, loves poetry and is a forty year old hunk. Oh, and there is a slightly, who am I kidding, seriously deranged villian on the loose. The author does a remarkable job of developing the relationship between Lillian and Thaddeus. It is delightful to watch their feelings develop and their priorities change. When the villian’s behavior reaches its crescendo, you will find yourself holding your breath and your pulse rate rising. The epilogue is a perfect ‘amen’ to the story.

Mystery and Love
Thaddeus and Lillian come together in this wonderful story of love and mystery. When there is concern that Lillian's secrect admirer may not have good intentions, her brother goes to their childhood friend who is now a very hard working Bow Street Runner. This is not exactly something he'd normally would but since he's a friend and there is something about Lillian he agrees. Mean while Lillian is a huge flirt and attracts many suiters. When things look serious they hatch Lillian's brother and Thad hatch a plan. Thad will be a rake suiter for Lillian's affections. What could possibly go wrong and surely affections would not rise. When Thad's work and his protection of Lily collide things come to a head. I highly recommend this book. It had it all I'd be nuts not to read more of Sandra Sookoo's books
