Publisher Description
They've always been best friends. But sometimes friendship hides something deeper. Miss Anne Thatcher knows she should choose a husband—but none have ever stirred her heart. Except Tobias Hawke, her childhood companion, partner in mischief, and quiet protector. They've shared secrets, laughter, and years of belonging. But love? That would change everything. And Anne isn't sure she's brave enough to risk the one friendship she's never wanted to lose.
He knows her like no one else—and fears she'll never see him as anything more. To Tobias, Anne has always been the one constant in his life: loyal, sharp, and quietly extraordinary. But she's not Little Annie anymore. And lately, every glance seems to echo with something unspoken. He's afraid to reach for more… afraid she won't reach back.
One moment beneath the mistletoe. One question that changes everything. As Christmas draws near, and tradition nudges them closer than ever, Anne and Tobias must decide whether the love between them is worth the risk. Because sometimes, the dearest bonds are the ones worth breaking—if only to rebuild them as something more.
Some questions linger for years. Some are answered with a single kiss… or two.
If you know what it's like to want something you believe you can't have—and to wrestle with the fear of reaching for it—this story will understand you.
This is the prequel to the Whickertons in Love series and was previously published in the holiday anthology Mistletoe & Mayhem.

Much ado about a kiss?
A kiss, a kiss. What is in a kiss? Humiliation is what it was. That horrible Missletoe. Annie and Tobias were so overwhelmed by the highly anticipated kiss because they didn’t want to destroy their longtime friendship. But Tobias’ brother and Anne’s cousins felt that the only way to get these two friends to admit they belonged to each other more intimately was to force a kiss under the Missletoe. Unfortunately Anne was so worked up about it that Tobias misread Anne’s signals. Did she detest the idea? Well, it the worst mistletoe kiss of all times. And it was all due to her cousin’s meddling. But if not for her cousin’s meddling and Tobias’ need to find her in the library the next day to apologize then they might never have kissed again sort of as a do over. And then.....all things led to a happily ever after. But oh...what wonderful kisses thereafter! I loved the swooney way that our talented author Ms Bree described that most swooney kiss. It was sooooo swooney! And yet still PG. Well worth the read!
Will a kiss change their friendship
Best friends
Annie and Toby have been thick as thieves and best friends since they were mere children.
Now, as Annie and Tobias, they are all grown up...still friends but terrified of changing the parameters of their friendship. Will a mistletoe kiss change their dynamic or will it go all wrong?
Sweet.
Recommend.
Adorable
Tobias and Annie have been the best of friends since childhood. All grown up, they are still friends, but both want more. Each loves the other, but is afraid that revealing those feelings might lead to rejection and loss of friendship. Their reluctance to address their feelings frustrates those who want to see them happy. Is there any way or anyone able to nudge these two forward?
This adorable holiday romp takes place at the Archibald holiday house party. Attending the party with Annie are her cousins Louisa and Leonora Whickerton and Grandma Edie, who are determined to get these two together. Pushing from the other side is Tobias’s brother Phineas. Their antics are laugh-out-loud funny and totally entertaining. The whole story is fun. (I did feel a little sorry for poor Lord Gillingham.) A charming story and wonderful characters make this prequel a perfect introduction to the Whickertons in Love.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
