The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an American children's novel originally published in 1900. The story chronicles the adventures of a young farm girl named Dorothy in the magical Land of Oz, after she and her pet dog Toto are swept away from their Kansas home by a tornado. Battling against the Wicked Witch, and with the help of her new friends – The Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion, they pursue a way for Dorothy to return home by seeking out the Wizard of Oz. The book is one of the best-known stories in American literature and has been widely translated. The author followed it up with thirteen additional Oz books.
