Novelist's Biography:

Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, an American writer and humorist born in Florida, Missouri in 1835. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, a town that would later serve as the inspiration for many of his novels.

After working as a printer's apprentice and a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River, Twain began writing in the 1860s. He gained national attention with his humorous and irreverent essays, stories, and speeches, and became one of the most popular and influential writers of his time.

Twain's best-known works include the novels "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," both of which are set in his beloved Hannibal and deal with the themes of friendship, coming of age, and race relations. He also wrote numerous travelogues, essays, and short stories, often using his trademark wit and satire to comment on society and politics.

In addition to his writing, Twain was a popular lecturer and performer, known for his humorous storytelling and lively personality. He was also an advocate for social justice, speaking out against slavery and imperialism and championing the cause of women's suffrage.

Twain died in 1910 at the age of 74, but his influence on American literature and culture has endured. He is remembered as a master of satire and humor, a keen observer of human nature, and one of the most beloved and iconic figures in American letters.

Synopsis:

"Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc" is a historical novel by Mark Twain, published in 1896. The book is a fictionalized account of the life of Joan of Arc, the French heroine who helped lead the French army to victory against the English during the Hundred Years' War.

The novel is written from the perspective of Joan's fictionalized secretary, who recounts Joan's life story from her childhood in Domrémy to her eventual trial and execution for heresy. Twain portrays Joan as a heroic and virtuous figure who is guided by her faith and a sense of divine purpose, and who is able to inspire and unite the French people despite facing opposition from powerful figures within her own country.

Throughout the novel, Twain also comments on the political and social climate of 15th-century France, portraying the conflict between the French and English as a battle between two different ways of life and cultural values. He also highlights the corruption and hypocrisy within the Church and the French court, which ultimately leads to Joan's downfall.

Despite being a departure from Twain's usual humorous and satirical style, "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc" is widely regarded as one of his most accomplished works and a masterpiece of historical fiction. The novel showcases Twain's skill as a storyteller and his ability to capture the complexity of human nature, while also paying tribute to a historical figure who continues to fascinate and inspire people to this day.
