Larger than life
Boudica, the warrior queen of the ancient Briton Icemi tribe, casts a large shadow in British history. Her rage-fueled rebellion against the tyrannical Roman occupation of her kingdom was actually quite brief. The difficulty with her story lies chiefly in the one-sided portrayal left by her Roman opponents, while the oral tradition of the Briton tribes accounts for the lack of records on their side of the story. The truism is that history is written by the victors, so this book draws heavily on Roman written documentation (Tacitus in particular). However, this account of her meteoric rise and crushing defeat also cites less accurate legend and popular historical speculation to explain how it is that her influence on history still persists. In more modern times, virulent and violent inequality may still plague groups of people, thus the passion for freedom and justifiable vengeance that ignited Boudica's rebellion still lives in the minds and hearts of the conquered and the oppressed, and contributes to her persistence in history.
