A Look Inside
“The question had come into my mind abruptly: were these creatures fools? . . . You see I had always anticipated that the people of the year Eight Hundred and Two Thousand odd would be incredibly in front of us in knowledge, art, everything.”
“What, unless biological science is a mass of errors, is the cause of human intelligence and vigour? Hardship and freedom: conditions under which the active, strong, and subtle survive and the weaker go to the wall.”

About the Book
H. G. Wells's debut book, The Time Machine, is a "scientific romance" that challenges the nineteenth-century notion that evolution equates to advancement. The plot centers on a Victorian scientist who, according to his claims, has created a time-traveling apparatus and has traveled to the future, arriving in the former city of London in the year 802,701. There he finds the race of the future, or perhaps more precisely races, as a result of the "evolution" of the human species into two different forms. The Eloi are creatures that live above ground. They are kind, innocent, fairy-like beings whose life seems to be without hardship. There is, however, a another race of creatures: the Morlocks. Originally subterranean, they now prey on the weak and helpless Eloi. Wells was "fast-forwarding" through the gradual process of changes to species, the physical environment, and the solar system in order to illustrate the Darwinian model of evolution by natural selection. This was accomplished by setting the action almost a million years in the future.
