Read the classic sustained sarcasm from the great Jonathan Swift himself. From author of Gulliver’s Travels, we get this wonderful satirical essay with its outrageous solution for poverty and famine in Ireland. A critique on the economic and social conditions and the callousness of the powers that be, but still a deeply enriching read, still relevant today as it was when he shocked the world with it when first published.

A Modest Proposal by Anglo-Irish author JONATHAN SWIFT is a book of literary fiction first published in 1729 in Ireland.
A true book of worth, a classic that lives in an era of timeless distinction. Early books emit an excellence unlike any from modern times. You will not be dissatisfied with this works, a celebrated essay classic filled with comedy, history, and social class at its finest.

A Look Inside
It is a melancholy object to those, who walk through this great town, or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, and cabbin-doors crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags, and importuning every passenger for an alms. These mothers, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in stroling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants who, as they grow up, either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country, to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes.

About the Book
A Modest Proposal For Preventing the Children of Poor People From Being a Burden to Their Parents or Country, and For Making Them Beneficial to the Publick is a 1729 Juvenalian satirical essay written anonymously by Jonathan Swift and published under the title A Modest Proposal. According to the article, impoverished Irish people may be able to resolve their financial difficulties by selling their children to affluent gentlemen and ladies. This scathing exaggeration condemned British policies against Irish people in general, as well as cruel attitudes toward the impoverished, who were predominantly Irish Catholics. (that is, "Papists")
Swift's article is considered one of the finest examples of sustained sarcasm in the annals of the English language. Swift's statement, "A young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee, or a ragout," surprises the reader because the essay's first section describes the plight of starving beggars in Ireland.
