A Look Inside
“I wish, as well as everybody else, to be perfectly happy; but, like everybody else, it must be in my own way.”
“It isn’t what we say or think that defines us, but what we do.”
“When I fall in love, it will be forever.”
“Run mad as often as you choose, but do not faint!”
“The more I know of the world, the more I am convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love. I require so much!”
About the Book
The novel Sense and Sensibility recounts the predicament of the impoverished Dashwood family, with particular emphasis on the sisters Elinor and Marianne, who symbolize sensibility (emotions) and good sense (common sense), respectively. Following their father's demise, they are reduced to abject poverty; he bequeaths Norland Park to their half-brother, John. John is discouraged from fulfilling his responsibility to care for his sisters by his avaricious spouse, Fanny. The family, consisting of Elinor, Marianne, their mother, and a younger sibling, among others, relocates to Barton Cottage in Devonshire. At this spot, the gregarious and spirited Marianne encounters Colonel Brandon, an elegant and established widower who is twenty years older than her. Despite his initial expression of interest in Marianne, she dissuades him and instead develops an intense crush on the handsome John Willoughby, who masquerades as a romantic partner but is actually a shady fortune hunter.
