This atmospheric read is like a thriller, a romance, and a coming-of-age story all at once. In a small Missouri town in the mid-’70s, teenage outcasts Saint, a beekeeping tomboy, and Patch, the one-eyed son of a single mother, are each other’s only friend. When Patch sees the most popular girl in school getting abducted, he fights the stranger off her, only to get held captive himself. Author Chris Whitaker (We Begin at the End) follows both Patch and Saint over 25 turbulent years after that fateful day. Practically each short, tight chapter ends on a cliffhanger, which makes it almost impossible to put down. This powerful novel lingered in our minds long after we stopped reading.

Amazing novel
Beautiful book! Well written with great characters that keep you thinking about them long after you’re done.
Fantastic. Beautifully painted storytelling. Surprises and twists with every page turned.
Of all the books I’ve read, this was the first that I actually felt required a review. The author does an amazing job of developing the characters, you feel like you would recognize them, if you saw them. So many twists and turns, you are constantly compelled to keep turning pages. Heartbreaking and also beautiful, you can’t help but to feel this story. Suspenseful and unpredictable. The writing style took some getting used to, at times I had to reread a sentence to make sense of the structure of the words. Overall, I can’t possibly recommend this book enough.
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time.
Great character development and a story that brings sadness and hope. Read it, you won’t be sorry!
