Publisher Description
The Mysteries of Pilgrimage is Book 7 of al-Ghazālī’s Revival of the Religious Sciences.
Millions make the journey. This book asks how many of them arrive. Al-Ghazālī walks the whole Ḥajj in order — from the day you leave your door to the day you come home — in ten stages a pilgrim can follow with the book in hand, then walks it again from the inside: the iḥrām, the circling, ʿArafāt, the stoning. A rite without its meaning is, he says, a body without a spirit.
He treats the virtue of the House, of Mecca and Medina, the manners of travel, and why a pilgrim can return with the sins of the road rather than its reward. Book 6 disciplined the appetite. Book 7 takes body, wealth and time and sends them to the House — the last of the pillars in the First Quarter, and the summary of the rest.
This English is taken from the classical Arabic of the Iḥyāʾ, not rebuilt from an older translation. It can be read straight through, or studied beside the original.
Go with your body. This book is for the part of you that has to arrive.
