The History of Discrete Math and Linear Algebra

The Math Behind Machine Learning, Twenty-Five Centuries in the Making

Publisher Description

Almost nobody in this story was building the mathematics you typically learn in class. Pingala was counting the rhythms of Sanskrit poetry. Cardano was trying to win at dice. A clerk in Han China was doing Gaussian elimination on a ruled board two thousand years before it had that name. Euler was answering a puzzle about a walk through a town. Markov was trying to win an argument about free will. This is the story of how their work became the mathematics that machine learning now runs on.

Part I is nine chapters, in rough chronological order: how much younger the vocabulary is than the mathematics, the triangle with five names, chance from a gambler's notebook to five axioms, the algorithm that came long before the word for it, eigenvalues asked first as a question about the solar system, the argument Markov built his chains to win, the picture and the table underneath it, the people who carried this mathematics out of the math room, and where the words came from, starting with the one that means womb.

Part II is a master timeline: 583 dated events across ten eras, from 480 BCE to 2025, each one carrying what happened, who did it, where, and which source says so.

Part III is reference, in twelve appendices: a register of 306 people, 168 of them with a portrait, the symbols and where they came from, a pronunciation guide, every number in the book re-derived in code, the disagreements between sources, the stories that check out and the stories that do not, the picture rights, a map from all 44 sections of the course to the history that belongs beside each one, and a 143-term glossary.

It shows its work. 3,973 source pointers connect claims to a bibliography of 266 works. Where the sources genuinely disagree the book says so on the page instead of quietly picking a winner: 48 conflicts are logged and 21 of them are still open. Appendix E re-ran the arithmetic in code before the book shipped, 1,157 checks across 22 scripts, 0 failures. Appendix G takes 122 claims you will meet in a textbook, a lecture or a video and checks each one against the documents.

Accessibility is built in. All 425 mathematical expressions are real MathML carrying a spoken-English label, so VoiceOver reads a formula as a sentence rather than spelling it out symbol by symbol. All 34 diagrams were drawn for this book and carry a written description. Text is selectable and resizable, navigation is structural, and the book declares no page color of its own, so it takes whichever Books theme you read in, with every rule, bar and diagram fill checked to hold up on a white sheet and a near-black one.
