Respectable Lady Seeks Dependable Shop Girl. Those averse to magic need not apply.

New York in the spring of 1880 is a place alive with wonder and curiosity. In this captivating Gilded Age historical fantasy, residents enthusiastically engage in both scientific experimentation and spiritualist pursuits. Séances are the entertainment of choice in exclusive social circles, and many enterprising women—some possessed of true intuitive powers, and some gifted with the art of performance—find work as mediums.

Enter Adelaide Thom and Eleanor St. Clair. At their humble teashop, Tea and Sympathy, they provide a place for whispered confessions, secret cures, and spiritual assignations for a select coven of ladies, who speak the right words and ask the right questions. But the profile of Tea and Sympathy is about to change with the fortuitous arrival of Beatrice Dunn.

When seventeen-year-old Beatrice leaves the safety of her village to answer an ad that reads "Respectable Lady Seeks Dependable Shop Girl. Those averse to magic need not apply," she has little inclination of what the job will demand of her. Beatrice doesn’t know it yet, but she is no ordinary small-town girl; she has great spiritual gifts—ones that will serve as her greatest asset and also place her in grave danger. Under the tutelage of Adelaide and Eleanor, Beatrice comes to harness many of her powers, but not even they can prepare her for the occult evils lurking in the darkest corners of the city or the courage it will take to face them.

So much fun

I loved this book, the pacing is interesting though, as I got to the end I thought I had missed or skipped some parts, but in general such a fun story and literally made me want to open a tea shop.

Magic, Mystery and Manhattan, Oh My!

The Witches of New York by Ami McKay is about magic, mystery, Manhattan… what more do you need?

I picked this up expecting a casual read and got pulled into something much better. Set in 1880s New York, it follows three women, Adelaide, Eleanor, and Beatrice, who run a tea shop for the city's elite, serving cures, charms, and a healthy dose of defiance. Also, there’s Perdu, a not-a-bird raven who quietly steals the show. THe book never did reveal his backstory. There’s definitely something there.

McKay weaves historical detail with just enough enchantment to make the world feel both grounded and otherworldly. The characters are strong, the prose flows effortlessly, and the atmosphere is gilded-age grit with a splash of spellcraft that kept me hooked. Quotes like "They'd lived there, just the two of them, in a house so large that even their shadows occasionally got lost" hit just right.

Interesting tidbit: While writing the book Ami McKay discovered her great-aunt, nine times removed, Mary Ayer Parker was executed for witchcraft. So there was a very real connect with her writing.

Another tidbit: “The Witches of New York” welcomed back “Moth”, the main character of McKay’s previous book “The Virgin Cure”, as an adult. So now I gotta pick that one up and read it.

Well written but dark

This book was too dark for me to enjoy. I only made it a quarter of the way through.
