Dr. Heidegger's Experiment

Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist and short story writer, became one of the leading writers of his time. 


"Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" is the short story first published anonymously as "The Fountain of Youth" tells about Dr. Heidegger, a strange old man, who once invited four elderly friends to participate in one experiment. He showed them a rose that he claimed was fifty-five years old. He produced a vase, a gift from a friend, that contained a quantity of water and explained that this water is from the legendary Fountain of Youth. Water caused the old rose to bloom; so Dr. Heidegger's friends became excited and wished to taste the water…
