Lo que hoy conocemos como el grupo de tradiciones rítmicas dominicanas es en realidad una mezcla que parte de la creatividad de nuestros primeros habitantes —en las paredes de las Cuevas del Pomier todavía quedan vestigios de los bailes del areíto taíno— y se enriquece con los contactos que se dieron con Europa y África. En Identidad y magia el folklorista Dagoberto Tejeda relata la historia de los géneros, los instrumentos, las festividades y el impacto cotidiano de estas fusiones, ilustradas con las coloridas fotografías de Mariano Hernández y Pedro Genaro.


Although we think of them as an ensemble of Dominican rhythmic traditions, they’re actually a cultural blend that began with our early settlers —the walls at the Pomier Caves still carry evidence of the areíto dances of the Taíno people— and grows richer throughout our exchanges with Europe and Africa.
