Clem reluctantly takes the job because the money would allow her mom to participate in a clinical trial that could save her life, but she ends up with possibly more than she can handle when she falls in love with Halloran. Author Kate Golden builds Clem’s character with snappy, evocative prose. Of course she has emotional walls and a hard time trusting men, so what’s going to happen after the cross-country tour? We were all in, rooting for her to overcome her insecurities and commit to the brooding, sensitive, and thoroughly Irish Tom Halloran. If If Not for My Baby was a song, it would be a sparkling and satisfying pop hit.

Dialogue is awful. Halloran reads Homer for fun and Clementine doesn’t even know who Homer is. Clementine is a plot device to show the reader how great Halloran is. Unreadable.
