Publisher Description
Donut shop owner Suzanne Hart knows how to treat her customers. But sometimes life can get a bit sticky. When a spat she has with a local blacksmith—one that could have been solved with a handshake and a mixed dozen—ends with his murder, Suzanne is caught dead in her tracks. Suddenly everyone in April Springs has their eyes on her. And they're hungry with suspicion.
Left with little choice but to catch the killer herself, Suzanne starts lining up suspects. But her case is full of holes. How did the killer strike in the middle of the day without a single witness to the crime? Who knew that the humble blacksmith was actually an heir to a family fortune? The heat is on as Suzanne tries to solve the case and save her business. Can she have her cake-donut and eat it too?
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Beck's frothy ninth outing for April Springs, N.C., donut shop owner Suzanne Hart (after 2012's Powdered Peril) wastes no time in whipping up a bloody mix of murder and sweets. Though Suzanne had been friends with local blacksmith James Settle, a trivial quarrel between the two shortly before he was fatally stabbed leaves her under suspicion. Suzanne, determined to prove that she's innocent, enlists the help of her best friend, Grace Gauge, with support from Suzanne's boyfriend, Jake Bishop, a state police investigator. Suzanne and Grace try to answer such questions as how the killer could strike undetected in broad daylight and whether the murder had anything to do with the large inheritance coming to James. Beck intersperses the pair's crime-solving with delicious-sounding recipes, creating an entertaining mystery that should sate series fans and whet the appetite of newcomers.
