Publisher Description

A debut YA graphic memoir about a Korean-American girl's coming-of-age story—and a coming home story—set between a New Jersey suburb and Seoul, South Korea.

Ever since Deborah (Jung-Jin) Lee emigrated from South Korea to the United States, she's felt her otherness.

For a while, her English wasn’t perfect. Her teachers can’t pronounce her Korean name. Her face and her eyes—especially her eyes—feel wrong.

In high school, everything gets harder. Friendships change and end, she falls behind in classes, and fights with her mom escalate. Caught in limbo, with nowhere safe to go, Deb finds her mental health plummeting, resulting in a suicide attempt.

But Deb is resilient and slowly heals with the help of art and self-care, guiding her to a deeper understanding of her heritage and herself.

This stunning debut graphic memoir features page after page of gorgeous, evocative art, perfect for Tillie Walden fans. It's a cross section of the Korean-American diaspora and mental health, a moving and powerful read in the vein of Hey, Kiddo and The Best We Could Do.

    In limbo

When I saw this book at the library and the cover caught my eyes. Reading this book reminded me so much of my home and school. At times I felt like I was in the book with the part of losing my first language but grew out of it and dealing with problems when I was a teen. This book is great lovely art and story itself.

    Incredible read & beautiful graphics

I initially bought this book for my 14yr old sister. I decided to read it myself and i am so glad that I did. It is a coming age memoir, that captures so many harsh truths of our teenage years. Mental health struggles, parental expectations, hardships navigating and learning life, isolation, so many things that we often face but never discuss. I absolutely fell in love with the rawness of emotions in this book and the way it went through different phases. I also enjoyed the way that mental health struggles were depicted and the very tough conversation of suicide attempt and how many respond to them. Debb went through much but it never felt heavy it felt real and as if I was living through many emotions with her. Incredible read that I will share with my younger with a now very special place in my heart.
