Publisher Description

Times-World Corporation filed two petitions for writs of mandamus with this Court, alleging that the trial court, at the criminal trial of John Henry Cassell, Jr., unconstitutionally denied public and press access to closed proceedings held in the judges chambers, including the voir dire of potential jurors. We conclude that the trial court did not follow the proper procedures before closing the voir dire and subsequent hearings in chambers, thus, improperly denying access to the press and the public. Therefore, we reverse the closure rulings of the trial court and order that the press receive any transcript or recordings of the closed proceedings not heretofore released.
