Publisher Description
In Springtime is a coming of age, fiction novel set in the early 1980s.
Junior high (middle school) has started, and Chris Cole is experiencing a rise in confusion and anxiety concerning himself and society.
Chris finds some comfort with his best friend, Nathan Moore—and a pretend spaceship set up in Nathan's garage, wherein they share imaginative stories together.
Chris questions and struggles with his Christian beliefs, passed on respectfully from his parents, but now becoming uncertain and frightening, especially in regard toward a Biblical apocalypse.
Discouragement from haunting nightmares and extreme shyness prevent Chris from receiving help for his adolescent turmoil. He is plagued with repeated thoughts of self-harm and suicide.
Unable to find answers or lasting happiness in the diminishing childhood fun with his friends, Chris finally attends a support group at school and discovers healing through confession among those who likewise share the pain Chris is going through.
Later, by talking with his father, and a youth group leader at church, Chris gains understanding and peace toward his Christian faith.
But throughout his recovery journey, Chris finds it hard to share what's happening in his life with his friend Nathan, who is growing up and beyond the childish fun that Chris wants to hold on to. Though their friendship is gradual declining, in the end, Chris shares his Christian beliefs with Nathan in hopes that Nathan will experience the joy and freedom that Chris has found; however, the decision to accept or reject it rests on Nathan.
