Publisher Description
The basis for the Apple TV+ show Black Bird.
In with the Devil presents the true story of a young man destined for greatness on the football field—until a few wrong turns led him to a ten-year prison sentence. He was offered an impossible mission: Coax a confession out of a fellow inmate, a serial killer, and walk free.
Jimmy Keene grew up outside of Chicago. Although he was the son of a policeman and rubbed shoulders with the city's elite, he ended up on the wrong side of the law and was sentenced to ten years with no chance of parole.
Just a few months into his sentence, Keene was approached by the prosecutor who put him behind bars. He had convicted a man named Larry Hall for abducting and killing a fifteen-year-old. Although Hall was suspected of killing nineteen other young women, there was a chance he could still be released on appeal. If Keene could get him to confess to two murders, there would be no doubt about Hall's guilt. In return, Keene would get an unconditional release from prison. But he could also get killed.
A story that gained national notoriety, this is Keene's powerful tale of peril, violence, and redemption.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
This chilling memoir will make you wonder whether you would befriend a serial killer if it got you a get-out-of-jail-free card. James Keene was a big-time drug dealer in the Chicagoland area, schmoozing with local politicians and celebrities until everything came crashing down. Locked up for 10 years without parole, he was offered a miraculous chance to erase his sentence—all he had to do was get suspected serial killer Larry Hall to discuss his heinous crimes. Keene and co-author Hillel Levin document his unnerving story in vivid detail. We appreciated how the authors painted both Keene and Hall in a human light, and Keene’s journey is packed with fascinating insights and the promise of redemption. Read the shocking true tale that inspired the Apple TV series.

In with the Devil
I did enjoy this book! I just wish more details had been added when the character was in isolation! How did feel to be in total darkness and silence? To lose track of time? Did he feel lost and questioning his life? How did he feel at the slightest sound and not be able to see?
The details he gave about Larry gave us an insight as to the person Larry becomes at certain moments! When talking about women, when he is focused on a project ( the falcons ), when in court and when he talks about his brother! It was as if dealing with different people based on his answers, reactions and physical changes! I kept asking myself, ‘ Which Larry did his victims see?’ My favorite part was when he offered Keene a falcon, in that crazed state, “What it innocently offered?” The dreams Larry had led us to believe he is schizophrenic, but I also see some form of Dissociative Personality Disorder and I have been kept wondering, “What was Larry’s diagnosis?” All in all, this was a great read, especially the last notes at the end of the book! Thank you!
Reads like a thriller!
An almost unbelievable story that quickly becomes a page turner. Highly recommend reading the book if you have had a chance to watch the AppleTV+ show “Black Bird”.
