Inside the Human Cell

The aim of Inside the Human Cell is to provide the framework of essential knowledge regarding cell organelles needed to understand human disease. The approach used fosters not only understanding, but also deeper insights into disease processes and clinical problems.


This highly interactive resource is richly illustrated with hundreds of diagrams and light- and electron- microscope images. Over 90 image galleries are provided, often containing precise overlays to unambiguously identify key features. Pop-ups are used to provide further detail. Animations illustrate dynamic changes, while interactive keynotes are used to clearly explain complex diagrams and images or multistep processes. Micrographs, diagrams and macroscopic images used side-by-side demonstrate the clinical relevance of cellular malfunctions, resulting in true integration across disciplines and unique insights.


Challenges presented at the end of each chapter provide further opportunities for knowledge extension. A revision chapter at the end of the book allows self-assessment, generally with useful feedback. Even the galleries can be used for self-testing in this way since an unlabelled image is presented first, followed by images highlighting important features.


Italicized text within the body of the book generally indicates a glossary link. Indexed terms are extensively cross-referenced and often illustrated with images and diagrams, making the glossary a highly effective resource in its own right. Hyperlinks within an index of chapters and of chapter sections complement the inbuilt navigational features.


This book was created by four medically-qualified authors with more than 70 years of tertiary education experience between them. It would be of value to anyone with an interest in understanding the role of the cell in clinical problems, including postgraduate trainees and students of medicine and biology.
