L. P. Dover’s tantalizing Second Chances series scores once again as the Carolina Cougars’ infamous bad boy takes a shot at seducing a driven career woman who’s supposed to be out of bounds.
Trying to live down his very public indiscretions, Carolina Cougars kicker Jaxon Reed feels like the most hated man in the NFL. Fans and teammates alike treat him with the disrespect he figures he deserves. Unfortunately for them, Jaxon’s no easy target. As payback, he sets his sights on the quarterback’s sister: a sultry brunette who’s curvy, confident, and sexy as hell. But what begins as a revenge fling turns into so much more—a lesson in humanity, and in love.
Bristol Thomas doesn’t have time for games, especially those played by her brother’s Neanderthal teammates. A talented interior designer with lofty goals, she doesn’t know the first thing about football, or Jaxon—except that he’s exactly the type of man she usually avoids. But when his deep laugh and deeper kisses break through her walls, she becomes the target of a fan who’s obsessed with Jaxon. Now she needs to know that Jaxon has her back . . . because he already has her heart.

Dover packs an emotional punch with her third contemporary Second Chances sports romance (after Defending Hayden), set in Charlotte, N.C. Pro football player Jaxon "Jax" Reed is adamant about not getting entangled in emotional relationships. Then he falls hard for interior designer Bristol Thomas, not realizing that she's the sister of his most-hated teammate. After a cheating football player breaks her heart, the last thing Bristol wants is a relationship with a pro athlete, so Jax hires her to decorate his house as a way of getting closer to her. Pressures mount on all sides: Jax's dying mother is thrilled that her commitment-phobic son has finally met his match, and a vicious woman with whom he had a one-night stand threatens to ruin the nascent relationship. At first, Jax is extremely hard to like; he's the stereotypical jerk athlete who sleeps with anything in a skirt and thinks he's God's gift to women. But his vulnerability soon begins to show, particularly with his love for his mother and his relationship with Bristol. Bristol is both sassy and sweet, and easy to relate to. Deft plotting and a hair-raising finale elevate this pulse-pounding tale.

Touching with some suspense
Jaxon sure comes off as a dirtbag to start. As his history is revealed, I came to like him more. He has created issues for others on the team, but this story is about his taming. Bristol fights for his love when she realizes how much Jaxon means to her. I loved the strength she showed when dealing with the other teammates and a stalker. This is part of a series, and I have enjoyed all of the stories including this one. I recommend this story and series.
I received a copy of this book through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.
