Publisher Description

Before joining the faculty at Harvard School of Public Health in 1988, Lucian Leape, MD, HFAGHE, was professor of surgery and chief of pediatric surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and the New England Medical Center. Dr. Leape is internationally recognized as a leader in the patient safety movement, starting with the 1994 publication of his seminal article, "Error in Medicine," in JAMA. He has published more than 130 papers on the topics of care quality and patient safety. An outspoken advocate of making patient safety a national priority and the nonpunitive systems approach to preventing medical errors, Dr. Leape has testified many times before the U.S. Congress and has served on various public and private boards and committees. He was one of the founders of the National Patient Safety Foundation, the Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Error, and the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Session on Medical Error. In addition, he was a member of the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Quality of Health Care in America, which produced the influential reports To Err Is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm.
