Stephen M. Shortell, Ph.D., FACHE, is dean and Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management at the School of Public Health, and professor of organization behavior at Haas School of Business, University of California-Berkeley. In addition to his main roles, Dr. Shortell holds appointments in the Department of Sociology at University of California-Berkeley and at the Institute for Health Policy Research at University of California-San Francisco. A leading healthcare scholar, Dr. Shortell has been the recipient of many awards, including the distinguished Baxter-Allegiance Prize from Baxter and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, the Gold Medal Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), and the Distinguished Investigator Award from AcademyHealth. He and his colleagues have also received the George R. Terry Book of the Year Award from the Academy of Management, the James A. Hamilton Book of the Year Award from ACHE, and several article of the year awards from ACHE and the National Institute for Health Care Management Research and Educational Foundation. He is a co-author of the book Remaking Health Care in America: The Evolution of Organized Delivery Systems. Dr. Shortell has served as editor of Health Services Research, as president of the Association for Health Services Research, and as chairman of the Accrediting Commission on Education for Health Services Administration. He is also an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. Currently, Dr. Shortell is conducting research on the evaluation of quality improvement initiatives and on the implementation of evidence-based medicine practices in physician organizations.
