Batten down the hatches for a military thriller overflowing with international intrigue and explosive action. Pike Logan and his crew are independent operators who get called in when the government needs help shutting down security threats on an international level. And when Sikh nationalists start making multiple terrorist strikes around India, impacting CIA activity and taking American hostages, guess who comes to clean house? Author Brad Taylor’s background as a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran loads every detail with authenticity—if you didn’t know what a “Sig Sauer MCX chambered in 300 Blackout” was on your way in, you’ll find out before you’re done. But the paramilitary might is leavened with plenty of humor and wisecracking, even in the most intense action scenes. And when you’re following a task force co-led by a guy called Knuckles, you know you’re gonna see some fur fly. Into the Gray Zone will get your heart pumping, and between the wit and the political double-dealing, it’ll give your brain plenty to chew on.

In Taylor's competent latest adventure for counterterrorist agent Pike Logan (after Dead Man's Hand), CIA director Kerry Bostwick asks Logan and his cohorts to provide security for a sensitive meeting in Goa, India. A reluctant Pike is assured that it will be a simple job; series fans know that means he and his friends on the Taskforce will soon be hip-deep in dead bodies. Pike joins his wife, Jennifer; Navy SEAL Knuckles; Marine Brett; and Air Force combat controller Veep in Goa to oversee negotiations between Indian billionaire Riva Thakkar and CIA officials hoping to mine rare earth minerals recently discovered in the region, with hopes of breaking a Chinese monopoly. Thakkar's involvement has put him in the sights of Chinese spy Mr. Chin, who orchestrates the billionaire's kidnapping in hopes it might derail the deal. Doing Chin's bidding is a small group of Sikh separatists in over their heads, against whom Pike and company square off. The plot is overcomplicated, even for Taylor, but when it comes to scenes of derring-do, he delivers the goods. Series fans will get just what they came for.

Needed Work but okay.
The teamwork was well defined, a little choppy but the intense drama at each takedown and active engagement is the reason I’ve continued with every Brad Taylor/Pike Logan book.
Not worth it
This iteration read like the author had a contract to fulfill, and in doing so he wrote this book to meet that requirement. Lacking in every way.

Disappointing. Formula writing, as though AI generated. Not worth the time. I’ve read all the others, and this is a step down; no flesh on the bare bones of a story, almost cartoonish in writing style.
