Invincible Invincible

Publisher Description

I’ll be honest with you—I’m no hero. Sure, the media tries to brand every Navy SEAL as some kind of Batman dressed in cammies. There’s even a line in one of our cadences: Superman is the man of steel, he ain’t no match for Navy SEAL. You’ve seen the movies—we’re infallible, invaluable, invincible. But that night, the one you read about in the papers … all I really wanted to do was get laid.

One harmless screw with an Aruban whore, no strings attached. I picked her out of a lineup—wild, dark hair, long legs and a crooked smile. After she sucked me off, I relaxed back onto the creaky, cum-stained cot, thankful for the blissful moments she gave me when I actually forgot for a second the faces of my buddies who died because I made the wrong call, the tears of the children I couldn’t save, and the eyes of the enemies I slaughtered during their last seconds of life.

But before I left, her hazel eyes peered into my soul. She whispered in a distinct Californian accent, “My name is Analía "Annie" Hamilton. I’m an American citizen. I was kidnapped on spring break five years ago. You’re my last hope. Please save me.”

One desperate plea. This wasn’t a Hollywood blockbuster or a New York Times best-selling thriller. I knew this time there was no room for excuses, no margin for errors. I had one chance to put on the cape and be her hero.

“Finding you was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

To be honest right up front, this book as it currently exists probably only should be rated 4 stars. The writing itself often doesn’t flow well, there are multiple continuity errors, the characters are often still, their actions almost forced, and the dialogue if flat and inconsistent. The present version is an expanded version of a previously published book by the same name. The author states this freely, saying she added a significant amount of new text including all the chapters from Annie’s pov. She also added a huge twist that was completely missing from the original.

Unfortunately these changes were not done seamlessly and are directly responsible for most of the problems I have listed. As for the twist, it not only wasn’t necessary but I feel it came across contrived and unbelievable. It also detracted from the strength Annie showed making it seem that was the only reason she survived.

I read both copies and personally I feel the original is a much better book. The original deserved the 5 star rating. The reason I am leaving it 5 star is the story itself is just so good. I was captivated from the first and read it in one sitting as I had to know how it ended. Also, and this is probably as important if not more so, I just loved Pat too much to give him anything less. He has stolen my heart and refuses to give it back. Reading the original after this rewrite only made me love him more. He was amazing in the rewrite and almost pure perfection in the original. I also don’t think giving Annie’s pov was necessary as I felt she was clearly and wonderfully real in the original. She was so strong and brave. Such a great partner to Pat and exactly who he needed, especially in the original version. Heck, I even like the original cover better as they look exactly like I imagined on it. 🙂

I hated it had to end and originally planned to read the next two books, Kyle and Vic’s stories not just because I want to see them find their HEAs but also to get glimpses of Pat & Annie. But apparently Alana also plans to write a Pat & Annie sequel (Indestructible) so we have that to look forward to one day. Kyle’s book, Invaluable, is already published. Infallible, Vic’s story, is supposed to be released this year. I can’t wait!

You can purchase the original version of the book in paperback version through Abe Books which is what I did when I read somewhere that there were significant differences. Or just read the updated one which is still a fantastic book. Either way I guarantee you won’t forget Pat & Annie’s story.

Find something else to read

I tried - really tried - to give the story a chance but it was supremely unbelievable. I can honestly say that this was the first story I've ever read where I wished for the two lead characters NOT to end up together. Pass on this. Find something else to read.
