Pacific Rim meets The Handmaid's Tale in this blend of Chinese history and mecha science fiction for YA readers.
The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.
When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead.
To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

I got absolutely sucked into this book!
At first I couldn’t quite get into it, the writing seemed just different enough from the writing rhythm that I had grown accustomed to in so many other books that to me it was hard to start. But I am so happy I finally was able to give this story its second well deserved attempt. You don’t see too many well written stories containing mech or mech adjacent creatures, so I didn’t have high hopes for this book, simply reading to pass the time in school. This book was quick to change my mind, once I had adjusted to the writing style I couldn’t help but be on the edge of my seat trying to anticipate what would happen next. I was smitten with the characters, especially the man of mystery who seemed no more than an intimidating brick wall in the beginning. Seeing all the characters grow and change with their environment was amazing, i could feel the rage of the characters, feeling their pain and heartbreak as I tried to pray for their safety from the other side of the page. 10/10 in my opinion and I can’t wait to read the sequel when it comes out later this year!
Review
For angry girls, gays, and those who want more than the corrupt and morally bankrupt world we live in
This book is for you.
Writing is sometimes funky. Mainly only using girls and boys instead of women and men had me feeling this was very ya but besides that I absolutely adore the writing and didn’t feel the “welcome to your nightmare” stuff was overdone.
Perhaps i relate too hard to Zetian because i feel i’d do the same in her situation. And as someone who was raped at a young age, this helped release some of the anger that i always will carry. Sincerely, thank you
Amazing
Incredible writing. I was hooked from the start. Wu Zeitan is an intense character that I can’t get enough of. 11/10!
