The universe has a direction. Every irreversible interaction deposits a permanent record — a trail — along the path a system has traveled. These trails accumulate, constrain, and deepen. The physics that governs this process operates at every scale, from photon emission to galactic formation to the structure of a human life.

Irreversible integrates established results from thermodynamics, information theory, quantum decoherence, and the recently formalized distinction between state entropy and path entropy into a single structural account of reality. It proposes that the Bekenstein-Hawking area-entropy formula measures accumulated path entropy along a trajectory rather than state entropy on a boundary — that the universe is not a hologram projecting from a surface but a web of trails accumulating along paths. It develops the consequences of this reading for persistence, integration, experience, identity, responsibility, and collective governance, and applies the framework to education, economics, and medicine.
