Is Polite Society Polite‪?‬

Howe's essays in this volume remain funny, pointed, and mentally stimulating to read. The travel essays do least well, but there are only a few. The title essay raises questions for today, when few Americans speak of polite and impolite society, but there are still strong social codes dependent on where one lives and the circles in which one moves.
