As Those With Hope

Times of crisis present preachers with one of the most critical moments of their ministry as they navigate their community’s pain and vulnerability. In response to a suffering world, Dr. Anne Emile Zaki presents a homiletic of crisis based on suffering and hope, from the cultural-denominational context of the Egyptian Protestant Church. This interdisciplinary study draws from the psychology of trauma and various models of crisis preaching. While rooted in the denomination’s state during the Arab Spring, its implications extend to the MENA region and beyond, with a global scope that examines the church’s responses to major crises such as the world wars, apartheid, and 9/11. Dr. Zaki masterfully highlights that the church’s identity, telos, and mission are refined at the intersection of hope and suffering.
