Eighty-year-old Newell Franklin lives a quiet, somewhat regimented life in his small wooden house on Elm Street in Archer City, Texas. Each morning he awakes at 6:00 a.m., showers, has his coffee and eggs, and then goes about the business of building doghouses and birdhouses—which he gives away. If the Texas Rangers are playing ball that day, he’ll watch or listen on the radio. Some days he goes fishing. His is a simple life. But that all changes when a young woman and her daughter move in next door.
