Loved It!

I loved this novel! I didn't want to stop reading after the 3rd chapter. Tete was a beautiful character. Being of Haitian descent I enjoyed all of the historical background. The only problem I had was how slow the first couple of chapters were. I put the book down a number of times because it was hard to start. I also wish that Rosset's character was developed a bit more. With this said, I still loved this epic novel!

The Island below transcends loss and finds joy

Mystical and complex expertly sewn together is the tragic yet inspiring story of a woman of spirit and strength, who against all odds persists through slavery, abuse, humiliation and loss to find and lift up beauty, joy and goodness in her life and those lives she touches with wisdom and healing hands as she strives to protect her children from the harsh reality of slavery and oppression. She is transcendent!
