Publisher Description
A new page-turning mystery about science, faith, love and belonging, set in a friendly desert community where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are commonplace parts of everyday life. Welcome to Night Vale…
“Brilliant, hilarious, and wondrously strange. I’m packing up and moving to Night Vale! –Ransom Riggs, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
From the authors of the New York Times bestselling novel Welcome to Night Vale and the creators of the #1 international podcast of the same name, comes a mystery exploring the intersections of faith and science, the growing relationship between two young people who want desperately to trust each other, and the terrifying, toothy power of the Smiling God.
Nilanjana Sikdar is an outsider to the town of Night Vale. Working for Carlos, the town’s top scientist, she relies on fact and logic as her guiding principles. But all of that is put into question when Carlos gives her a special assignment investigating a mysterious rumbling in the desert wasteland outside of town. This investigation leads her to the Joyous Congregation of the Smiling God, and to Darryl, one of its most committed members. Caught between her beliefs in the ultimate power of science and her growing attraction to Darryl, she begins to suspect the Congregation is planning a ritual that could threaten the lives of everyone in town. Nilanjana and Darryl must search for common ground between their very different world views as they are faced with the Congregation’s darkest and most terrible secret.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Fink and Cranor's thought-provoking second novel tied in to the paranormal podcast Welcome to Night Vale (also the title of the first book) examines how religion and science work in a town that doesn't make sense. Nilanjana Sikdar has the difficult job of being a scientist in Night Vale. After head scientist Carlos gives her a secret assignment to investigate a rumbling in the desert, Nilanjana meets Darryl Ramirez, a member of the Joyous Congregation of the Smiling God, and asks him out on a date. During her investigation, she becomes convinced that the Joyous Congregation has something to do with the rumbling. Nilanjana and Darryl, along with their scientist and worshipper friends, must work together to figure out what is threatening the town and stop it. They neatly sidestep clich s and instead become wholly three-dimensional characters. The relationship between science and religion is satisfyingly explored with humor and insight. Readers need not be familiar with the podcast or the previous book to enjoy this work, but fans will appreciate the cameos from well-known Night Vale residents.

Hooked
Addicted from cover to cover. The twists and turns weren’t very predictable but most of them were. However the humor and crazies living in night vale always puts a smile on my face.
Second Night Vale Novel Delivers for Fans.
“It Devours!” is the second Welcome to Night Vale Novel by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor. It is of course based on the hit comedy/horror podcast that has been going on since 2012. The novel is set in the world of the strange dessert town of Nightvale, where the unusual and odd is commonplace. While this story is pretty much self contained, it probably is best if one is somewhat familiar with the podcast or Night Vale through other media.
This novel follows Nilanjana Sikdar, or Nils, who is a scientist who works at Carlos’s Laboratory. She becomes involved in investigating mysterious giant holes which begin appearing in and around Night Vale, which swallow up residences and businesses. She thinks these may have some connection to the Church of the Smiling God. At the same time she has met Darryl who is a member of this congregation, and despite her concerns, she has become involved with him. The story includes a romance in Night Vale!
This volume tells a different story than we’ve seen before. We learn more about the Smiling God, and the Desert Otherworld. We also interact with a pilot of the surveillance helicopters, which is different. However, we still have some of the core characters like Cecil and Carlos, as well as others. It’s a good story for fans that includes the familiar and introduces new aspects to our favorite strange desert town.
Joyfully, I(t) Devours(ed this book)!
I loved this! As a faithful listener and supporter of Night Vale Presents, as soon as I got the funds for it, I preordered the book! It is wonderfully written and in a style similar to mine, and you don’t need to know anything about the podcast in order to read this. That being said, I had a little bit of an issue in placing the setting in terms of time in the book, considering how I’m caught up. Time is weird in Night Vale and the story is wonderful, so of course that wasn’t going to stop me from reading it!
