It’s hard to keep a big secret in a small town . . .
When Paige Hollister discovers her “Mr. Right” already has a “Mrs. Right,” she swears off men forever. Even more humiliating, she suddenly finds herself labeled the other woman and out of the teaching job she loves. So Paige does what every unemployed single woman staring thirty in the face does: She hightails it to the beach. Bad luck like hers is hard to outrun, however. Her getaway is stalled when her car breaks down in a small-town chock full of meddling, nosy residents. The worst of them being the local sheriff—none other than her estranged father.
Finally on top of the golf world, Tanner Gillette is poised to show everyone he’s not just an entitled playboy coasting through tournaments on his pedigree. That is until his life is turned upside down by a little girl who shows up on his doorstep with a birth certificate inexplicably bearing his name. Complicating matters more, the kid isn’t talking. When the stress of caring for a child whose mother is AWOL gives Tanner a bad case of the yips, he’s forced to enlist help from the one person in town who can’t wait to leave.
Sticking around Chances Inlet and her father’s shiny new, über-successful family isn’t on Paige’s to-do list. Especially when she’d prefer to keep her embarrassing incident under wraps. Yet she can’t walk away from the troubled little girl. Or the sexy Australian golfer who just might make her want to take a chance on trusting her heart again.
Is she willing to trust her heart?
It Had to be You is the fourth book set within the Chances Inlet series, but the romance stands alone. Paige is trying to escape from her past when her car breaks down in her estranged father’s town. There, she quickly runs into Tanner with his own family drama, and she can’t help but want to help him and get closer to him. But is she willing to trust her heart in matters of family and love, or will she run at the first hint of pain?
This book was so good! I loved all of the emotions that were present, between the hurt of the past, interacting with family, feeling that hesitant blossom of love, and overcoming life’s hurdles, I was invested in this book from page one and loved every minute I spent reading! Paige was sweet and fierce, but was really lacking self confidence due to previous mistakes. Tanner was just doing his best to please everyone, to help keep reputations in place, while also living his life to the fullest. I really loved the team they made together, with his daughter, with leaning on each other, and with being together as a relationship. There is some family drama and issues that need to be dealt with, from both main characters, but it didn’t hinder from the relationship that formed. I really loved reading this book! Reconciliation and love and trust are three major themes found within these pages, and I look forward to reading more!
Perfect place for a second chance
Four and a half stars
It Had to Be You is part of Tracy Solheim’s Chances Inlet series, set in a small town in North Carolina ready to provide a second chance. Paige Hollister finds a place there to heal her broken and mortified heart. Humiliated when she is betrayed by her cheating ex and summarily fired, the town and its residents warmly welcome her and give her time and space to recover and regain her footing.
This is Tanner Gillette’s year. If he can just hold onto his number one ranking, he’ll have golfed the year of a lifetime. But an unexpected visitor definitely shakes his usual equilibrium, and he’s got to find it again fast.
Tracy Solheim’s characters are warmly written, and Paige and Tanner are a pleasure to follow as they find their way to a steady future together. This series is very enjoyable, and while each story stands alone well, it’s lovely to catch up with them in the others in the series.
