The political and social situation in Italy at the end of the Second World War and after the war, particularly stressing the role of antifascist political groupings: first of all the Christian Democratic Party, the Italian Socialist Party and the Italian Communist Party. The role of Roman Catholic clergy and the Holy See in the process of rebuilding Italian democracy. The activity of Italian political leaders, such as Altiero Spinelli and Alcide De Gasperi, in the context of the internal policy and initiatives concerning European integration is discussed.
