Pickens, hereinafter defendant, was convicted, after a jury trial, of rape contrary to sec. 944.01, Stats. 1973, and sentenced to an indeterminate term of not more than ten years in the Wisconsin State Prison. His conviction followed an unsuccessful attempt to conduct his own defense without the aid of an attorney.
