बचपन में वाट की परिपक्व बुद्धि के बारे में बताती हुई कई कहानियाँ भी मौजूद हैं; ऐसी कहानियाँ, जो हर जीनियस की जिंदगी में होती हैं। इन कहानियों का स्रोत हैं वाट की कजिन मिसेज मरियन कैंपबेल। जेम्स जब महज छह साल के थे तो खडि़या से अँगीठी की दीवार पर कुछ लिख रहे थे। उस दौरान उनके यहाँ आए एक सज्जन ने उनके पिता से कहा, ‘‘मिस्टर वाट, आपको अपने इस बच्चे को पब्लिक स्कूल में भेजना चाहिए। उसे स्कूल से अलग इस तरह घर में बेकार घूमते रहने की इजाजत नहीं दी जानी चाहिए।’’ उनके पिता ने कहा, ‘‘श्रीमान, मेरे बेटे की खिंचाई करने से पहले यह तो देख लीजिए कि यह क्या कर रहा है!’’ दरअसल बच्चा अँगीठी की दीवार पर कुछ भी यों नहीं लिख रहा था। वह उसमें ज्यामीतिय आकार बना रहा था और अपनी गणना के नतीजों को लिख रहा था। आगंतुक को उसका जवाब मिल चुका था। उसने कहा, ‘‘माफ कर दीजिए। मैंने गलत समझा था। इस बच्चे की शिक्षा नजरअंदाज नहीं की जा रही है। लेकिन यह असाधारण बच्चा है।’’
