In Johnson v. New Jersey, 384 U.S. 719 (1966), we held that Miranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S. 436 (1966), "applies only to cases in which the trial began after the date of our [ Miranda ] decision . . . ." 384 U.S., at 721.
