Nice to be guided by an expert
Upgrading JIRA can be tricky, especially if you have a complex setup. Some versions are much hairier than others. Jobin is a huge expert (he is frequently on Atlassian Answers and on JIRA expert groups and he wrote the big JIRA Development Cookbook).
This upgrade handbook is a nice step by step. Biggest advantage is that it tells you where the tricky surprises are.
