John Inglefield's Thanksgiving

There was a blacksmith who was the central figure of the domestic circle on the evening of Thanksgiving Day. All places of the table were crowded by members of his family. One of the group was John Inglefield's son who was a student of theology at Andover’s University. He had also a young daughter who was sixteen. The only person who wasn’t his relative was the blacksmith’s pupil who seemed more like an own son of John Inglefield than did the student. Hear the blacksmith’s place was an empty place – which belonged to his dead wife. Suddenly one young woman came through the open door and sat at a vacant chair of the dead wife… Who was the strange woman? Why did she came without any permission?
