Once again, Mallory is uprooted by her domineering father and moved to an apartment far from her friends and school. In an unguarded moment, her father mutters a cryptic comment about her mother. Mallory is taken aback. Her father rarely speaks of her mother, and only to say, "She abandoned you as a baby." Mallory doesn't even know her mother's name.

Mallory begins to question: Who is my mother? What is her name? Why did she abandon me? . . . Was I abandoned?
