They were first attested during the reign of Psammetichus I and their presence increased constantly. They came from mainland Greece, the Aegean Islands, Caria, Lydia, Libya, Kush, Phoenicia, Aram, Israel, and Judah. They are mentioned on private stelae, and in administrative and legal papyri, biblical books, classical sources, Egyptian and Assyrian royal inscriptions, and their presence is also demonstrated by archaeological finds.
