Publisher Description
To win the job of her dreams, a relationship-prone journalist needs to learn how to stay single in this heartwarming and hilarious new romantic comedy from the beloved author of Lease on Love.
Lana Parker is an expert girlfriend. After a disastrous breakup with her high school boyfriend, she's bounced from long-term relationship to long-term relationhip and even works as the dating and relationships columnist for one of Los Angeles's trendiest websites. But when Lana suddenly finds herself single, she's ready to take a break, both personally and professionally.
That is, until her high school ex, Seth Carson, takes an assignment at Lana's site. Having spent years traveling the world as a freelance journalist, Seth's finally ready to put down roots. Seth and Lana's chemistry is just as combative—and undeniable—as ever and quickly leads to a competition that could shape both of their careers. Pitted against each other by Lana's boss, they are each tasked with writing an article series that goes against their usual dating type: Lana needs to write about being single and staying single, while Seth must learn to settle down and become boyfriend material. Whoever's series is most popular wins a highly coveted dream job. But when the two square off, it's not only their careers on the line—it’s also their hearts.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
This entertaining rom-com from Ballard (Lease on Love) kicks off when relationship columnist and serial monogamist Lana Parker is dumped by her boyfriend of four years in "an Elle Woods moment" and her boss at online magazine Always Take Fountain challenges her to write a new column about being (and staying) single. If she does well, she has a shot at writing lifestyle pieces for the much more prestigious paper that has just acquired the site. But there's a catch: she's competing against her former best friend and first boyfriend, Seth Carson, a rootless freelance journalist who's been challenged to write about becoming "boyfriend material" after years of playing the field. As former lovers turned bitter rivals turned uncertain coworkers, Lana and Seth slowly rebuild their old connection, discovering a deep chemistry that never quite faded. Ballard's leads easily prove their compatibility through snarky banter and subtext-laden glances that leave no doubt as to their inevitable happily ever after. But the story, which refreshingly sees both protagonists undergoing therapy for their respective issues while reassessing their personal and professional goals, is one of healing and emotional growth as much as romance. There are few surprises here, but that doesn't make it any less fun.
Customer Reviews
Lovely
Starts slow but it picks up. I forced myself to love this story which I did but it didn’t excite me as much as I wanted it to.
All the feels
I adored this book, and it was such an easy read. The dialogue is *chef’s kiss*. I felt like I was having a conversation with my besties, and I found myself giggling as I read (and anyone who brings up Ted Lasso… sold).
The story itself was a second-chance romance, and I fell in love with both characters. I think I would have loved Seth’s POV, but there was still an opportunity to see character growth and development. The side characters weren’t just side characters, they enriched the story and added elements that left you with the warm and fuzzies.
I loved the details. This story was written in a way that played like a movie while I read. Overall, I would highly recommend this book! It’s a feel good, for sure!
Delightful and charming romance
Four and a Half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒
Just My Type by Falon Ballard is a heartwarming and humorous story about a relationship-prone woman who needs to learn to be on her own.
Story Recap:
Lana Parker likes to be in a relationship, even when it’s not a true love match. As soon as one relationship ends, she jumps right into a new one. Now, she’s single again and she wants to stay that way for a while.
Then Lana’s ex-boyfriend from High School shows up at Lana’s work as a temporary employee on assignment. They had split up on bad terms and the last person Lana wants to see is Seth. Seth has spent the last few years flying around the world doing freelance journalism and is hoping to land a more permanent position at a Los Angeles newspaper. His assignment at Lala’s Web Magazine office called Always Take Fountain is a stepping stone to a job at the LA newspaper. But, Natasha, the boss, has decided to make both of them compete for the plum journalist position at the newspaper. The competition is for Lana to stay single and Seth needs to find one woman to settle down with.
My Thoughts:
I love a good office romance and especially a second chance romance, and Just My Type ticked all the boxes. Lana wasn’t happy to see Seth back in her life, but it was clear they have chemistry, and they have so much in common, including a competitive spirit.
I was pulled right into this story and enjoyed the competition between Lana and Seth. The competition was not realistic, however, the author did an excellent job of convincing me it was realistic by making the boss, Natasha, an ambitious woman, and Lana a people pleaser. Otherwise, I don’t think a sane employee would enter into such a competition.
Overall I enjoyed this second chance, enemies to lovers, workplace romance!
Recommendation:
I highly recommend Just My Type to anyone who enjoys romantic comedies. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
