Publisher Description
#1 USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks continues her suspenseful and sizzling Slow Burn series with the fifth book featuring the men and women of Devereaux Security Services.
Raised in a strict religious cult since she was a young girl, Jenna has no connection to the outside world beyond vague flashes of memory that seem to be from another life. Memories she clings to when the cult leaders discover her extraordinary ability to heal—and punish her. Years held captive and forced to do the cult's bidding have turned Jenna into a meek, timid woman…or so they think. In truth, she is merely biding her time, waiting for the perfect moment to escape.
When a terrified young woman tries to steal the SUV of Devereaux Security’s toughest recruit, Isaac’s anger quickly turns into a strange sort of protectiveness for the beautiful, bruised stranger. But when they are caught in a firestorm of bullets and Isaac is hit, he’s sure the end is near, until Jenna touches him and closes his wounds. As he tries to bring Jenna to safety, she refuses to tell him what danger haunts her or how she healed him, but Isaac vows to do whatever it takes to gain her trust…and her heart. Because with just one touch, Isaac knows he wants Jenna to be his—forever.

Not my favorite Maya Banks
I have read every book by Maya Banks offered by iBooks and kindle. This one is the only one where I got bored with the WAY too gushing main characters. The other point that didn't make much sense was the female main character is supposed to have been in a cult for 20 years and denied basics but in most areas is somewhat worldly? When she was kidnapped at age 4?
Loved it
Jenna has a special gift, she can heal people. She has lived in a religious cult since she was four years old. Never seeing or knowing the outside world. Until everything comes together and she escapes. She runs until she finds a little gas station and hides in the back of an old pickup truck. Once she reaches the city she finds a car unlocked and tries to steal it but is caught by the owner.
Isaac, an agent for the security company DSS, stopped for coffee and as he’s walking out to get in his vehicle, he sees someone trying to steal it. He pulls his weapon and when they turn around, he sees a young woman. But as they are talking, Isaac is shot in the chest. He knows he’s dying but she puts her hands on his chest and he feels the most warmth and light in his body. Once he is completely healed, he tells her to run. She takes the truck and drives away.
Isaac had called for backup and they follow the tracker on the vehicle. When they locate it, Jenna is curled up in the back asleep. He moves her and takes her to his home. He vows to keep her safe but a drug lord is after her and wants her for what she can do. They have to keep moving from safe house to safe house because he somehow can’t find her. When he finally gets his hands on her, Isaac and his whole team of DSS agents are there to help bring her home.
Excellent story. Love at first sight. A man filled with darkness. A woman filled with light and barely memories of her past. A little sex. A drug lord. Crazy religious cult.
Good, Too many Inner monologues and soliloquies
It’s a good, run of the mill storyline if your wanting to get your fix without investing much reading time. A lot of the book is drawn out and very, unnecessarily, wordy. Half the book I just scrolled through the soliloquies and inner monologues to get to the main points.
This book would be great if it was cut down by at least a third, maybe even a half.
