Journalist Brogan Gilmore had been a rising star when an unethical shortcut on a story leads to his fall from grace. A chance encounter with convicted murderer Melender Harman a few months after her release from prison provides Brogan with a chance for career redemption—if he can land an interview with her.
After serving her 17-year sentence, Melender has one objective: To uncover the truth about what happened to her cousin the night the toddler disappeared. When Brogan pursues her for an exclusive story, she reluctantly agrees if he'll help her reexamine the original investigation into Jesse's presumed kidnapping and murder.
While re-investigating the case, Brogan struggles to keep his objectivity as he begins to believe Melender is innocent of the crime—and starts to envision a possible future together. Then a shocking discovery throws their relationship—and investigation—into turmoil.
As Brogan and Melender come closer to solving what happened to Jesse, will their budding relationship survive the truth?

Redemption
“Sometimes, the path to redemption takes some strange turns.”
I can easily visualize this book playing out as a drama on the screen. The mystery and the multiple perspectives. A reporter, a grieving family, our heroine who has served over a decade and a half on the charge of murder, nefarious men for hire, and more.
This was a thorough, investigative novel with a strong slow burn thread of romance. I appreciated the strong Christian theme also. Ex convicts aren’t generally my typical cup of tea, but this novel really pulled me in. The historical and cultural connections, the familial ties and disruptions, the ethics of journalism, and so much more. It definitely challenged my faith with the Christian treatment of those who have served their time. I was rightly convicted. It’s so easy to fall into cultural traps and mindsets. I loved how this book laid things out so thoroughly and completely. It was a wonderful read that kept me thinking and attempting to solve the mystery. I’m excited to read more from this author.
I received an ARC of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
She wasn’t alone!
Sometimes, the path to redemption takes some strange turns.
Imagine being charged with a crime that you did not commit and spending the next 17 years in prison! That is the experience of our heroine Melender. Her late night job protected her from most unnecessary questions, but that was about to change with her heroism in thwarting a robbery at her place of employment.
Brogan is an investigative reporter, or at least he was until he took liberty with his sources, making his findings questionable. Starting over was difficult for both of our well developed characters. Would her innocence finally be proven and would he manage to redeem himself by printing a story that was completely true?
This book was impossible to put down as I was rooting for Mel and wondering if the mystery of what happened to Jesse would finally be solved. An early copy of this book in The Seeking Justice Series was received through the author. These impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
