"Justine, or The Misfortunes of Virtue" is a novel by the Marquis de Sade, set just before the French Revolution. Despite her efforts to uphold virtue, Justine is met with unending adversity and torment. Ultimately, she meets her sister, and her name is cleared, but her life ends in tragedy when she is struck by lightning.
