Publisher Description

Kanye West is the self-proclaimed Steve Jobs of the Internet, downtown, fashion and culture. He doesn't just produce critically acclaimed rap albums, he has ideas for water bottle design and architecture. He tried to design a leather jogging pant, but European fashion designers won't allow him to be great, because he doesn't have the necessary connections. Kanye West Superstar is the story of how Kanye West became such an important person to himself and also to America.

Discussed in Kanye West Superstar:

Ghostwriting allegations: Kanye West once won a Grammy for "Jesus Walks," a song written by Rhymefest. The author tried to have him disqualified on the grounds that rappers who use ghostwriters shouldn't be allowed to win a Grammy.

Fatherlessness and black masculinity: Rap music, once easily the straightest genre of music, is becoming increasingly gay. Why is that? Could fatherlessness in the black community be related?

Kanye's obsession with pr0nography: Kanye West travels with a suitcase filled with interracial pr0n that he once left on the set of a photo shoot. His mom caught him with pr0n on multiple occasions as a child, and now he's married to Kim Kardashian. His life is essentially a series of pr0n-related events.

Kanye's beefs with two U.S. presidents: At a telethon to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina, Kanye famously declared that George Bush doesn't care about black people. President Bush declared it the worst moment of his presidency, and later Barack Obama -- the first black president -- also bashed Kanye.

Interracial relationships: Kanye West was once engaged to marry a black woman. He's since been involved in high profile relationships with two white women. He's also come under fire for controversial statements about race-mixing and the girls he casts in his videos.

Rap video vixens: Speaking of Kanye's videos, he's known for casting some of the most powerfully built women in the history of music videos -- which is quite a history. Where does he find these women, and what does he do with them?

Kanye's long-simmering beef with Jay-Z: Did Kanye purposely try to sabotage one of Jay-Z's albums? What does Beyoncé really think of Kim Kardashian?

The Taylor Swift incident: Will the white community ever forgive Kanye for snatching the microphone from Taylor Swift's hand, as she was accepting an award, to declare that Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time, of ALL TIME?

Kim Kardashian's film career: Kim Kardashian, before she was Kanye West's baby's mother, once acted in a film. Ray J wrote a song about it. This is discussed here in more detail than you require.

Culture vultures: Kanye West has generated hundreds of millions of dollars for the entertainment industry. Why won't they let him design a leather jogging pant?

Great read!

The book was entertaining and the author's transition from one great topic to another was enjoyable. Although there are a few grammar errors and indecipherable slang, it's excusable because it gives this book an authentic feel.

Pure Disrespect

This book is pure evidence of a hater. This author is known for bashing the best in the rap game. The book is full of disrespect to his deceased mother and also to his wife. His sarcasm is certainly not humorous but inevitable throught the entire first pages. I put the book down after the 8th page and its a complete joke. I would not reccommend this book at all whatsoever.

Re: Grammar errors and indecipherable slang?

... Is that really what you want in a book? Bad writing and "indecipherable" content? And you feel that this lack of professionalism and talent/quality lends a feeling of realism to the book?

Are you on Thorazine?

I don't know how this hateful little piece of pop culture target practice even made it past the idea stage.

THERE IS NOTHING GOING ON HERE.

This reads like a community college student's phoned-in English Composition term paper. Not just any student, but the insufferable guy in the front row with the mutton chops and South Park tee, who constantly makes embarrassingly unfunny comments and talks to the teacher like they're buds.

It's insulting because it completely negates the unparalleled musical influence of one of the most important artists of our time, and focuses exclusively on the kind of TMZ-generation *OMG* moments that have absolutely nothing to do with Kanye West's music, influence or legacy.

Why, in 2014, is ANYONE still talking about the "Taylor Swift incident"? Or Ray-J? Or the "beef" between Kanye and Hov? Every subject in this literary abomination has been clinically dead and culturally irrelevant for YEARS.

Long story short - somebody thinks they're very very clever because they have basic cable, and nothing to do with their time. This is a desperate plea for attention and laughs from a guy with nothing new or interesting to say. But even if every sarcastic burn was on point, this book would still be junk food for the brain because the fact is, Kanye West has won. His achievements outweigh his occasional public missteps, and he is without question the most vital artist of a generation.

Listen to Graduation if you want to know about Mr. West. Or The College Dropout. Or Late Registration. Or 808's & Heartbreak. Or My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Watch the Throne, Cruel Summer, Yeezus... because that's where he is. He's not in the memes or mean tweets or award show recaps. This book is an insult to hip-hop, written by a mouth breather who can't write.
