Kidnapped

David Balfour goes for his due and is sold to a ship. Stevenson’s Kidnapped is the Appin murder, Alan Breck, and a boy’s education in the heather — loyalty, the Jacobite shadow, Scotland as a chase. Adventure with wet shoes and a stubborn conscience. The Covenant, the round-house, the flight in the heather. Uncle Ebenezer’s house is only the first trap. Stevenson invented a Scotland you can run across and still not own. Alan Breck in the round-house; the heather after that.
