Publisher Description
A cautionary tale for a world in which social media has shattered the boundaries of intimacy.
The first time that Mélanie met Clara, she was stunned by Clara’s sense of authority, and for her part, Clara was struck by Mélanie’s pink, glittery nails, which shimmered in the dark. “She looks like a child,” thought the first. “She looks like a doll,” pondered the second.
These two women, both of the same generation and exposed to the same forms of media throughout their lives, could not be more different in adulthood. Mélanie is a social media superstar, broadcasting her children's daily lives on a family YouTube channel. Clara is a young police officer, assigned to the case after Mélanie’s daughter Kimmy is abducted.
Traversing the Big Brother generation, the social media influencer generation, and right up to the 2030s, Delphine de Vigan offers a bone-chilling exposé of a world where everything is broadcasted and monetized, even family happiness.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The dangers of social media take center stage in this thought-provoking French thriller. Chic Parisian Mélanie is a wildly successful mommy influencer with a YouTube channel devoted to her kids, Sammy and Kimmy. Clara is a young police officer who is fiercely dedicated to public service. The two women couldn’t be more different, but fate throws them together when six-year-old Kimmy goes missing and Clara takes up the case. Author Delphine de Vigan makes us understand what makes both of these fascinating characters tick—from Mélanie’s early experiences as a failed reality TV star to Clara’s childhood attending rallies with her activist family—before pulling us into what soon becomes an eerie and disturbing abduction case. (She also uses a brilliant time jump to speculate on what social media culture will ultimately do to our society on a psychological level.) With its razor-sharp social commentary, Kids Run the Show is a suspenseful and cutting-edge read.
